The Happening

BLINK! Blink goddammit!

Yeah, I know… welcome to 2008!  My Netflix queue got a bit boring so I decided to put on some movies that I really had no desire to watch.  This was the first – and it has made me rethink this idea completely

The Happening is a movie about an attack that begins in Central Park, an attack that is first thought to be a terrorist attack followed by government conspiracies.  Later it is found that the problem is actually because the plants are trying to protect themselves from the humans and are releasing a toxin in the air that causes people to lose their natural protective instincts and just kill themselves.

While the plot of this movie is interesting (many of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are like this), the execution completely fails.  First of all, I often enjoy Mark Wahlberg but his acting in this movie was atrocious.  He always acted like he was asking a question when he was talking, or maybe he was exasperated.  Either way, I couldn’t help but chuckle through the movie every time he spoke… especially when he started talking to the plant.  Really?

But that’s not the worst part.  Zooey Deschanel is a beautiful young actress but I have no idea what she was trying to do while playing this role.  I think her eyeballs were glued as wide open as possible to give her the impression of fear… even when it wasn’t necessary.  And she was taking queues from Mark with how she spoke.  Either she was being fed lines or she was trying to overact, but it failed miserably.

All in all, this movie just stank.  Mr. Shyamalan really needs to rethink his strategy.  Signs, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were great movies that really made you think, but everything since that point has gone downhill.

This is really making me reconsider taking Lady in the Water off of my queue…
