Google vs China

GooChina

So many of you have probably heard about Google debating on pulling their services from China.  When I first heard about it, I was pretty excited.  China has become the bane of America’s existence.  How many times are we going to have to send out warnings about lead in toys and other items before we stop purchasing items from them?  What about the material cadmium that they are using to make products that has been proven to cause cancer?  Are we really that engrossed in greed that we have to purchase cheap items from China in order to make money even though they can cause people harm?

I was excited when I found out that Google was talking about pulling out of China.  Google found out that multiple human rights activists’ accounts that are through GMail were hacked by people in China.  Not only that, but China is requiring Google to censor their searches in China to comply with their laws.  Ridiculous.

Now of course there are people who are trying to talk Google out of doing this.  China is the most populous country in the world and there are a lot of big bucks to be made by having your product there.  Some think that it is a bad move for Google to leave China.  Again, money, money, money.

Don’t get me wrong.  China has made some leaps and bounds that even we haven’t thought of, but to do it at the cost of human rights or even people’s lives?  And don’t even get me STARTED on the impact they have on my job.  Personally, I hope that Google goes through with it.  Someone needs to start a trend and who better than one of the largest industries in the world?
